My 3 year old Beagle mix started throwing up Wednesday night. She coughed up her entire dinner, and then anything she tried to ingest afterwards such as water. Thought maybe she had some sort of dog flu or something. Then she kept throwing up all night. She seemed to be acting alright Thursday morning, except she wouldn’t eat her food.
I get home from work Thursday afternoon, and she had eaten some of her food....and then thrown it up all over the couch. I decided a trip to the vet was in order, as it is entirely unlike her to turn away food or treats. She wouldn’t even touch boiled chicken and white rice.
As it turns out, the brilliant animal ate a rock at some point. The rock passed through her stomach and got lodged firmly in her intestine. The doc told me that immediate surgery was the only option for treatment . Lovely. So I sign the paperwork (estimated cost of $4,000-5,000) and tell them to do whatever they have to do to take care of her. As I’m signing the documents, my bank calls. They had suspicious fraudulent activity on my card at a gas station in Ohio. It was suspicious to me too , as I have not been to Ohio in over 10 years. They tell me they have to shut the card off. Awesome.
Anyway, I worked out funding on credit, paid the $2,000 deposit, and pup went into the surgery. Got a call two hours later, and the surgery went perfectly. They got the rock out in one piece and she was sleeping off the anesthesia. If she recovers well today, I can go pick her up tonight (they have to keep her for 24 hours for observation.) Now, all I’m thinking about is going through my backyard on my hands and knees and getting rid of any rocks I find.
I’m also going to make her wear a sign from her cone of shame that says “I cost my parents $5,000 because I’m not smart enough to avoid swallowing big rocks.”

Cost of surgery: Ouch!
Fraud alert: Double Ouch!!
The fact that you can hug your doggo for as long as you want: PRICELESS!!!

As a fellow beagle owner,
Yeah...
They’re awesome dogs, but they’re also complete idiots. Glad your buddy’s going to be okay.

Oh well. Not the first time our kids force us into bad financial situations.

Glad she’s doing ok. Pity about the rock eating, and the associated costs. The bank thing is a hassle, but in the grand scheme of things is not important (though definitely not what you want to be messing with when you need money now ).

I tell people she’s part Beagle and part concrete block. She’s a love, but lacks a bit in common sense, even for a dog.

We’re on our second. We had the first one for almost 13 years. Current beagle is a rescue, was abandoned in an apartment for a couple of weeks and I’m pretty sure ruined his vocal cords trying to get some attention. We’ve had him for 3 months, and he’s healthy and happy now, but is a complete jerk. He also has a strange obsession with birds.

Yeah, the bank stuff is easy enough to take care of, just a nuisance heading into the weekend. As long as I get the pup back, I’ll be just fine.

Glad she’s gonna be okay... buuuut...
“So I sign the paperwork (estimated cost of $4,000-5,000)“
If I was presented with that quote, my next question would be “how much to put her down?”
I mean really... she threatens her own life b
y eating a rock? That’s Darwin knocking on your door trying to tell you something.

we went through the same thing with one of our cats, we think she has pika and would generally eat little pieces of foam from these puzzle piece tiles we had in our sons playroom but usually theyd pass and wind up in the literbox, until they didnt. luckily her surgery was only 1500 dollars. glad your puppy is doing alright now though

I justified it thusly:
She’s a little over 3 years old, and we’ve had her since she was a little puppy. In almost three years of ownership, this is the first large expense she has incurred for us. Her food is comparatively cheap, her annual vet appointments and flea/tick/worm pills are chea p. My girlfriend and I actively do not want and will not have any human children. So yeah this surgery is a lot, but still a hell of a lot cheaper than a kid over the same amount of time.
She’s a part of this family. If I wasn’t opposed to children, I wouldn’t think twice if a child of mine swallowed a rock and needed surgery to get it out. Sure, it’s a fairly substantial chunk of money, but it’s not going to bankrupt us. It’ll just mean my ProCharger savings fund will be a little light for a few months.
